Future Oscar-winner’s thriller leaves fans ‘uncomfortable’ | Films | Entertainment

‘One of the most intense action thrillers’ that keep viewers on edge is being rediscovered by fans.

The spine-chilling and genre-blending horror film, Red Eye, features a future Oscar winner and considered a must watch for those who enjoy the genre.

This new found attention comes as of today (July 1), it joins the latest massive monthly content refresh for subscribers on Netflix.

However, that is just for those based in the US. Those based in the UK can instead find the title available on Paramount Plus.

This is accessible either via its own dedicated streaming platform or as an add-on via Amazon Prime Video.

First hitting the big screen in 2005, the movie was crafted by the legendary director Wes Craven, celebrated for his work on seminal horror classics such as The Hills Have Eyes, A Nightmare On Elm Street, and the Scream series.

Starring Rachel McAdams as Lisa, Red Eye follows her character’s seemingly chance encounter with Jackson, portrayed by Cillian Murphy, during a flight to Miami. The plot takes a dark turn when Jackson is revealed to be a terrorist who coerces her into a plot to assassinate the United States Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security.

Remembered for its seamless fusion of horror and edge-of-your-seat thrills, the film even starts off with a meet-cute reminiscent of a rom-com, as showcased in the trailer, reports the Mirror US.

Boasting an impressive 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes, critics have lauded Craven’s ability to sustain tension throughout the film, particularly noting his use of claustrophobic camera work and nightmarish imagery.

One reviewer enthused: “Craven shows he still knows how to ratchet up the tension – chiefly using claustrophobic camera angles – and conjure up images and scenarios that are the stuff of nightmares.”

Another critic wrote: “When taking place at the airport and on a plane, “Red Eye” is pitch perfect. The cloistered space and confined quarters ratchets up the suspense, often to uncomfortable (but welcomed) levels.”

The film boasts a devoted fanbase that continues to champion its merits online.

One enthusiastic supporter declared: “This movie is sooo underrated it’s insulting! Great actors, great story line, anyone who doesn’t like it clearly has a personal issue! This movie is phenomenal, I can watch it over and over! It’s a must watch if you haven’t yet you won’t regret it!”.

Another viewer gushed: “The acting was top-notch, and the film was a thrilling rollercoaster ride from start to finish. The suspense was palpable, keeping me on the edge of my seat until the very end. The anxiety was intense, but ultimately, it was worth the emotional investment.”

Many fans have praised the stellar performances from McAdams and Murphy, the latter of whom would go on to claim an Academy Award nearly two decades later.

One admirer commented: “This is definitely one of the most intense action thrillers I have seen. This movie delivers a solid performance by Cillian Murphy as the antagonist and Rachel McAdams did a wonderful job, this movie has gripping suspense and it is a really good economic thriller and it is underrated Wes Craven really made a good movie here definitely worth watching.”

Red Eye is streaming on Paramount Plus.
