Ben Affleck, has said that a film currently streaming on Netflix is one of the greatest ‘underrated masterpieces’.
The star of Batman v Superman and Gone Girl, has shared his favourite films.
He is set to appear in the highly anticipated sequel, The Accountant 2, where he will reprise his character Christian Wolff, a genius at solving complex problems.
When an old acquaintance is murdered, leaving behind a cryptic message to “find the accountant,” Wolff is on a mission to solve the case.
As the situation escalates, Wolff enlists the help of his estranged and deadly brother, Brax (Jon Bernthal).
Together, they unravel a lethal conspiracy, becoming targets of a relentless group of assassins determined to keep their secrets hidden.
Ahead of the film’s release, Affleck appeared in the Guest Selects YouTube series for Alama Drafthouse, where Hollywood’s biggest names share the titles that have inspired them throughout their careers.
However, Affleck admits that it’s impossible to definitively name five all-time favourite movies as his choices are constantly changing. He reveals that his selections are mainly influenced by recent viewings and those that have inspired him while making The Accountant 2, reports the Mirror US.
Kicking off with his latest favourite, Affleck heaps praise on an award-winning title, declaring: “I thought that Conclave was a really great movie with wonderful acting and directing and cinematography and I didn’t think that I would find the story of how they elect the next pope to be particularly compelling but I actually found it tense and gripping and and kind of masterfully executed.”
Moving onto another recommendation, Affleck labels Accountant 2 as “a sort of two-hander action comedy drama movie” and cites Midnight Run as his top choice in that category.
Reflecting on the film, he says: “It’s a magnificent movie. It’s brilliant and funny and no one has ever been better than they were in that movie. Unfortunately it came out against Die Hard, same weekend. Obviously things panned out for Die Hard but Midnight Run remains in my view like the perfect example of how you execute a movie like this that’s commercial and funny and entertaining and broad but specific and about people that I really care about. I can’t say enough good things about Midnight Run. You you should just see it if you if you like this genre. If you like movies.”
Affleck next highlighted a film he feels is often overlooked. “I think Seven is probably one of the great underrated masterpieces. I think people don’t include it sometimes in the lists they make of great movies because it’s a serial killer movie and it’s people go it’s like horror It’s actually I think one of the best constructed movies ever made. The screenplay, the execution, the performances, they all work beautifully in concert with one another. The acting is great. The plot and the tension. The reveal point has stayed with us ever since.”
For those in the UK, Seven, or Se7en, can be streamed easily as it is currently available on Netflix.
Affleck also praised another Brad Pitt film, stating: “Tree of Life is one of the most beautiful movies I’ve ever seen. Terrence Malik is an incredible director.”
He also recommended The Usual Suspects, Jaws, Chinatown and There Will Be Blood. When informed by producers that he had already listed seven films, Affleck responded with a grin: “OK, I could keep going.”
