Vet says your dog will live longer if you stop feeding them 1 common f

A vet has revealed that one common food could lead to health troubles for your dog later down the line. Even though pups often love this food, the vet recommended that pet owners stop this one habit to prevent the likelihood of a serious illness developing.

According to Dr Kim Smyth, the Petplan staff veterinarian, the food can actually increase the risk of pancreatitis in dogs. It manifests as a painful and potentially severe inflammation of the pancreas, which is crucial for digestion and regulating blood sugar. According to VCA animal hospitals, this inflammation can range from mild to life-threatening, and while many cases have no clear cause, some cases are linked to specific triggers like high-fat diets.

With high fats being linked to pancreatitis, Dr Smyth strongly advised against feeding dogs any fatty scraps left on plates at the dinner table.

Many foods that humans consume are extremely high in fats and sugars compared to what pets should eat.

She told PetMD: “In addition to adding extra (and unnecessary!) calories to your dog’s diet, pet parents risk inducing pancreatitis by feeding their dog fatty table scraps.”

Pancreatitis occurs when digestive enzymes, normally released into the small intestine to break down food, prematurely activate within the pancreas, causing it to essentially digest itself.

According to the animal hospital, the most common signs include nausea, vomiting, fever, lethargy, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and decreased appetite.

Pets may take a ‘downward dog’ position during an attack, with their rear end up in the air and their front legs and head lowered.

To avoid your dogs begging at the table for more food, the vet recommended feeding them in another room while you eat your meal. You could also offer healthier treats like baby carrots or apple slices to keep them satisfied.
