Keeping your washing machine clean and well-maintained is crucial since it’s the appliance responsible for washing your dirty laundry. However, the damp environment can sometimes lead to issues like mould growth or unpleasant smells.
The good news is that there are plenty of simple, affordable, and effective ways to clean your washing machine, ensuring your clothes come out smelling fresh. Many cleaning enthusiasts have joined the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook group to share their best strategies for tackling bad odours and grime.
One woman reached out to the group for advice after noticing a persistent smell from her washing machine. She asked: “Any suggestions for getting rid of a smell from my washing machine?”
Explaining what she has tried so far, she mentioned: “I’ve run two 90-degree washes and always use white vinegar instead of fabric softener. I also make sure to leave the door open after each wash and clean the seals regularly.”
Her pleas did not go unanswered as various cleaning fans responded in droves with an array of clever hints. One stand-out solution that emerged, which many people can find right at home, dismisses the need for specialised cleaning products, reports Lancs Live.

Instead of using a commercial washing machine cleaner, creative members of the Mrs Hinch community suggested placing a dishwasher tablet directly in the drum. They say it “really works” for a refreshingly clean washing machine.
One person revealed: “I used dish washer tablets on a hot wash and stopped using capsules. Really worked.”
Another member of the group shared their success story, writing: “Did the Aldi washing machine cleaner a bit of bleach and 2 dishwasher tablets on a 90 degree wash, my washer looked brand new and all marks on grey sealer gone.”

Another individual recounted the advice of an appliance technician: “I had a technician that fixed my appliances once tell me that the best way to clean my washing machine was to put 6 dishwasher tablets in the drum and put it on the hottest (60deg) cotton cycle.” They added: “It cleaned the drum and pipes beautifully. I do it every 6 months.”
Dishwasher tablets, which can be picked up at most supermarkets or discount stores like B&M and Home Bargains, can be incredibly cost-effective – with some like Asda’s All in 1 Citrus Dishwasher Tablets coming in at just 8p each.
Other people offered additional methods such as running a boil wash with soda crystals, white vinegar, and a dash of bleach for two cycles. One suggestion was: “Pint of white vinegar and couple of handful of bicarb. Fill the machine up with water then leave minimum 20 mins but I leave my over night then finish running the cycle.”

A shift from gel pods to powder tablets also proved beneficial for one user, who noticed a difference after changing their routine: “I stopped using gel pods and found that it cleared. Now using powder tablets,” they observed.
Meanwhile, a diligent cleaner emphasised the importance of maintenance: “Check drawers, drains, hoses, seals, filters, EVERYTHING!” A user named Sally suggested: “Fresh lemons with toothpaste on the lemon.”
Jacqueline chimed in: “As well as everything else you do, I take the drawer out after every wash and put back once completely dry. I clean the upper part where the drawer is with hot water and toothbrush to save it clogging. I never leave washing in either wet or dry.”
Expert shares tips on washing machine door cleaning
Dishwasher tablets are formulated with strong cleaning agents that effectively combat stubborn grease, dirt, and food particles in dishwashers. These agents also work well to eliminate detergent buildup, dirt, and mould in your washing machine. They assist in breaking down tough residues, dissolving grime, and freshening up surfaces.
How to clean your washing machine using dishwasher tablets:
Start with an empty machine: make sure there are no clothes or items inside the washing machine.
Add the tablets: place one or two dishwasher tablets into the drum, depending on the size of your machine.
Run a hot wash cycle: choose the hottest water setting available on your machine and run a full wash cycle.
Allow to air dry: once the cycle is finished, keep the washing machine door open to let the drum dry out.
Optional wipe down: if desired, you can use a clean, damp cloth to wipe the interior of the washing machine to eliminate any leftover residue.
Maintain regularly: to keep your washing machine in top condition, repeat this cleaning process every three months.
