Explore how your shoe choices reflect your unique personality traits

Next time you step out the door, take a closer look at your shoes – they might reveal more about your personality than you think. A new personality quiz offers shoe lovers the chance to find out if they’re a rebellious boot-wearer, a chilled-out sandal, or something else entirely.

Designed with situational questions around your go-to outfits, dream holiday destinations, and favourite shoes, the quiz uses behavioural insights to match individuals to specific footwear – all while highlighting the subtle psychological signals your choices send about who you are.

According to leading behavioural psychologist Jo Hemmings, the shoes on your feet could be the secret to success in life’s defining moments – like landing a new job or impressing on a first date.

“People’s choice of footwear is often a sneaky but revealing psychological signal,” says Hemmings. “We unconsciously – or consciously – make snap judgments about personality, habits, wealth, and even romantic potential based on someone’s shoes.”

She adds: “For many women, an otherwise well-dressed man could seriously give the ick factor with the wrong shoes. Footwear plays an integral part in how we judge whether someone is ‘our kind of person’, though this naturally varies from individual to individual.”

For men and women alike, shoes are a defining feature of personal branding. Research carried out by Deichmann – Europe’s largest footwear retailer – revealed that Brits take just 59 seconds to form a first impression of someone. And shoes, it seems, are a key focus of that snap judgment.

The cleanliness of someone’s footwear (38%), its appropriateness for the occasion (28%), and whether it complements their outfit (18%) are among the first things people notice.

Additionally, trainers are widely associated with a laid-back personality (45%), while those who wear smart shoes are deemed more successful (36%). From the style and colour to the condition they’re in, shoes play a pivotal role in shaping how others perceive us.

Commenting on the findings, Simon Wilson, Director at Deichmann – which promises to offer the lowest high-street prices or refund the difference – said: “Everything about your shoe choice reveals something about your personality, whether it’s a bold statement heel that exudes confidence, or a comfy sandal that shows you’re laid-back and free-spirited.”

For those daring to make a statement, Hemmings notes that a pair of hard-to-get trainers or shoes in bold colours – like leopard print heels or bright sandals – may underline your sass and attitude. But beware of stereotypes: the study also highlighted assumptions, such as the outdated belief that high-heel wearers are less intelligent – a misconception Hemmings is quick to refute. “As a psychologist, I can assure you we can put these misconceptions to bed,” she says.

So, whether you’re gliding in chic slingbacks or stomping through the day in biker boots, your footwear could be saying far more about you than you’d expect.
