Expert urges foodies never to do one thing with air fryer

Air fryers can make your cooking life so much easier. But when it comes to washing up, they can be seriously annoying.

This leads some to try and cut corners – and a hack has gone viral online urging people to put dishwasher tablets in their air fryer, put water into it, and turn it on a cycle.

Of course, those familiar with electrical appliances may automatically see the issues with this method. However, because it’s online, many people follow the hack without thinking about the potential repercussions involved.

A few months ago, it was reported that an air fryer caught fire after a person tried the hack for themselves. So Giuseppe Capanna, product safety engineer at Electrical Safety First has warned why this is not the best idea.

Giuseppe warned: “Air fryers have become a staple in many kitchens and are designed to cook food using hot air circulation.

“However, recent viral videos showing people attempting to clean their air fryer by putting water into the drawer and switching it on are extremely concerning.

“These appliances are not designed to come into contact with water. Doing so can risk electric shock, damage to the appliance and can potentially cause a fire due to the shorting of electrical components.

“These ‘hacks’ may appear quick and convenient, but they are dangerous. You should always make sure the air fryer is switched off and unplugged before cleaning and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

“Never assume that a ‘hack’ is safe simply because it looks easy or has gone viral”.

How should you clean your air fryer instead?

To clean an air fryer safely, start by unplugging it and allowing it to cool completely. Carefully remove any removable parts, such as the basket, tray, or pan.

Wash these parts with warm, soapy water using a non-abrasive sponge or cloth to prevent scratching. If there are stubborn stains or stuck-on food, soak the parts in warm soapy water for about 10-15 minutes before scrubbing gently.

For dishwasher-safe components, you can choose to place them in the dishwasher if directed by the manufacturer. Use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe down the interior of the air fryer, being cautious not to damage the heating element.

Take extra care to avoid submerging the main unit in water, as this could damage its electrical components. To handle any grease or food residue on the heating element, turn the air fryer upside down (if possible) and gently clean the area using a slightly dampened soft cloth or a small, soft brush.

The exterior can be wiped down with a soft, damp cloth and dried thoroughly. Make sure all parts are completely dry before reassembling the air fryer and plugging it back in.

Always refer to your air fryer’s instruction manual for any specific cleaning recommendations from the manufacturer to ensure proper care and maintenance.
