Petrol cars cost more per mile than EV, figures show | Personal Finance | Finance

Motorists sticking with petrol are paying the price – quite literally – as new figures reveal electric vehicles cost less than half as much to run on a per-mile basis. Despite forecasts of a 6p-per-litre drop in petrol prices earlier this month, average prices at the pumps have barely moved, with a litre now costing 134.3p, down just 0.4p from March’s low.

That puts the cost of running a petrol car at 11.8p per mile, while EV drivers using home charging pay just 5.65p per mile, according to the AA’s EV Recharge Report for March 2025.

And it is not just those with driveways benefiting. A drop in peak-time slow charging – often used by those without access to home chargers – has brought some relief, falling 6% in a month.

“The drop in peak rate slow charging is good news for EV owners without a driveway,” said Jack Cousens, head of roads policy at the AA.

“Closing the gap on the so-called ‘pavement tax’ is a positive step, but the government missed the chance to take bold action by retaining the 20% VAT rate on public charging at the Spring Statement.”

EV vs Petrol: Cost Per Mile (Standard Flat Rates)

Charge Type Speed Mar Avg (p/kWh) Pence per mile (p/mile)

Domestic Up to 7kW 25 5.65

Slow Up to 8kW 50 11.30

Fast 8–49kW 60 13.56

Rapid 50–149kW 74 16.72

Ultra-rapid 150kW+ 78 17.63

PETROL n/a 135.60p/l 11.86

The figures come alongside new Department for Transport data showing a 28% annual rise in public charging devices, with the total now standing at 76,507. Of those, one in five are rapid or ultra-rapid, meaning more EV owners can top up quickly and easily.

“Any fall in petrol pump prices is at best sluggish despite the slump in oil prices,” said Cousens.

“Meanwhile, the growth of charging infrastructure is encouraging. Eliminating range anxiety is key to help drivers who are considering making the switch to electric have more confidence in the national network.”
