Martin Lewis issues urgent plea over scam video ‘stealing your money’ | Personal Finance | Finance

Some may have seen a video of Martin Lewis advertising a WhatsApp group offering investment advice. But the Money Saving Expert has confirmed that the video is a fake.

The video showed ‘Martin’ advertising a new WhatsApp group ‘he’ was launching where he would share “three stock ideas each day, along with the latest market insights”. The clip appeared to have been screen recorded from Facebook Reels, posted on an account called ‘Money saving expert’ and even had a logo for ITV’s This Morning in the corner. It was then reposted on X (formerly Twitter) by @p4kir4mb0, who captioned the video: “Just signed up to this new WhatsApp group led by big Marty Lew, can’t wait for all the insider tips to make me BIG moneyyyyy. (The evil side of AI, eh?)”

But the real Martin Lewis reposted the video, urging people not to join the group. He said: “PLEASE KEEP YOUR EYE OUT FOR THIS SCAM DEEP FAKE AI VIDEO! If you see it please:

“a) Report it to the platform as a scam b) Post a reply to it to warn others off it and ensure they know it is criminals trying to steal their money and nothing to do with me.”

The Money Saving Expert has said he will never advertise anything and doesn’t give investment advice. If you see a video of him doing this, it is a deepfake, and the information is not to be trusted.

Martin says he has the “weird accolade” of being the most scammed face in Britain. He added that it was “weird and pretty frightening” to have his face and voice imitated.

“I’ve spent my entire career trying to help consumers, and these criminals, thieves, organised crime people have perverted my reputation,” he said on his BBC Sounds podcast.

In November of last year, a man revealed he had been scammed out of £76,000 after seeing a deepfake video of Martin that was promoting a non-existent bitcoin investment scheme.

This was part of a scheme by Georgia-based criminals who scammed £35 million out of savers using celebrity faces including Martin Lewis, Zoe Ball, and Ben Fogle.
