British Gas customers in England can slash up to £546 off their energy bills by making one home change.
The major energy supplier, which serves around eight million UK households, says the huge saving can be made by those who get a heat pump installed in their home. Heat pumps are currently more expensive to buy and install than a conventional boiler, but they are significantly more energy efficient and can be cheaper to run, potentially saving you hundreds of pounds per year if you switch.
They work by capturing heat from the air, ground or water and then passing this through a heat exchanger, where energy is then transferred to the water that flows through your radiators or underfloor heating, and to the water stored in hot water cylinders.
Households in England, Wales and Scotland can claim a £7,500 grant towards the cost of installing a heat pump and British Gas is offering customers a price match guarantee, promising to match any like-for-like quote.
The supplier says making the switch to a heat pump can unlock cheaper heating bills, with savings of up to £546, and on top of this, British Gas is offering customers an exclusive discounted rate of electricity to generate extra savings.
British Gas said: “Save up to £546 with our exclusive energy offer. Switching to a heat pump can help cut your energy bills. And you can boost these savings even further with our exclusive energy offer. It gives you a discounted rate of just 14p per kWh on all electricity used by your heat pump for the next 12 months.
“We know changing to a new kind of heating can seem like a big move, so our Warm Home Promise is there to give you total peace of mind. We only install a heat pump if we’re confident it’ll heat your home as well as a boiler. We design your new heating system to reach the right temperature for your home. And if it doesn’t, we’ll come to put things right – or give you your money back.”
The supplier says it offers a range of options for spreading the cost of installing a heat pump into “manageable monthly amounts”, so customers don’t have to pay for the pump in one lump sum.
The process of installing a heat pump involves three main steps – booking a free home survey, getting a fixed-price quote and then installation, which usually takes around five days, but it can depend on the size of your home. Once installed, British Gas says homes can then “look forward to lower heating bills and a smaller carbon footprint”.
The supplier adds: “The only fuel needed to run ASHP heating is electricity. The amount of electricity required depends on the size of your home and also the quality of your insulation.
“The better the insulation, the less heat your home will lose – and the less energy will be needed to operate the heat pump. A heat pump in a well-insulated home should be cheaper to run than a traditional gas boiler.”
