Elvis Presley feared The Beatles would end his music career and left h | Music | Entertainment

Elvis Presley was all shook up and feared his music career would end when Beatlemania hit America 60 years ago.

Even though the Memphis crooner was the biggest star on the planet, he felt the Fab Four’s sensational impact could make him irrelevant.

“The King” endured “insecurity” about not appealing to youth audiences, especially as The Beatles were leading the British Invasion of the US in 1964.

Carol Connors, his secret girlfriend at the time, revealed the icon was worried his career would be crushed within a decade.

But Elvis, then in his late 20s, did not try to increase his appeal with media tours.

The legend, who would have turned 90 on January 8, was actually shy and unnerved by the adulation when meeting adoring fans in public.

Carol, 83, revealed: “I do believe there was a part of him that didn’t realise his career was not going to be fleeting, that his success was going to be forever.”

She added: “He was wondering ‘are The Beatles going to knock me off my throne?’.”

Carol opened up about the rock ’n’ roll icon’s concerns as she promoted her memoir Elvis, Rocky & Me, which is out now.
