Science says that during turbulent times, we look to the nostalgic to bring comfort. And that’s exactly what it felt like during Anastacia’s show last night at Manchester’s Apollo. The American singer, who is now 56, shot to fame 25 years ago, when in 2000 her debut album Not That Kind was released. It was a huge hit, providing a tuneful backdrop to the early Noughties with tracks like global success I’m Outta Love. The show was a celebration of its anniversary, and what a party it was.
Hitting the stage in the first of four sparkling outfits, Anastacia kicked off proceedings with One Day In Your Life. I’ve never seen her live before, nor, when questioned, had most of the sold out 3500-strong crowd. But right from the get-go she did not disappoint, her immediately recognisable voice on fantastic form, able to hit her well-trodden high notes with ease. “No matter why you’re here, I appreciate that you did it before I died,” she joked, the first of many witty quips from the singer. It was clear Anastacia doesn’t take herself too seriously, making her all the more lovable.
Accompanied by a slick five-piece band, Anastacia clearly enjoyed her time in Manchester. And as a result, so did we. As the show progessed, she played all her big hits. Left Outside Alone saw no girl or gay seated. Paid My Dues came with a side salad of sass. As did Sick and Tired.
A nice change of pace came thanks to a ballad section, with Heavy On My Heart and Hold On, the latter which saw Anastacia get emotional. It also saw her showcase her impressive vocal range. I could have done without the cover of Sweet Child of Mine which came later, and edged too far into karaoke for my liking. Although having said this, I was clearly in the minority – the crowd lapped up every word, yelling them in unison.
Part hen party, part singing-into-your-hairbrush-in-your-bedroom, by the time Anastacia’s show drew to a close with an encore of Not that Kind and I’m Outta Love, it would have been the stoniest without a smile on their face. A joyous trip down memory lane, and a celebration of pop at its best, Anastacia brought the house down. I just hope it’s not another 25 years before she comes back.
