It’s been eight years since the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie reunited Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner with Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann, as the curses of the sea were broken.
Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow was last seen sailing off into the sunset. But hopes of a sixth and possibly final adventure were dashed when the star was dropped from the franchise in 2018 following his ex-wife’s allegations of domestic abuse, which the actor strongly denies.
Yet having won his libel case against her, fans have been hopeful that Depp will reprise his best-known role with producer Jerry Bruckheimer once again helming Pirates 6.
Now, after months of silence, Orlando Bloom (who has played Turner in four of the five Pirates movies) has teased what appears to be going on behind the scenes.
Appearing on This Morning, Bloom said of Pirates 6: “There’s been all kinds of things. Who knows? There’s been talk. I can’t say anything at the moment, because I really don’t know. They’re definitely… I think they’re trying to work out what it would all look like. I, personally, think it would be great to get the band back together. That would be great. But there are always different ideas, so we’ll see where it lands.”
“Getting the band back together” would clearly hint at Bloom rejoining forces with Knightley and Depp. Legacy sequels riding nostalgia in the hopes of box office return are pretty common in Hollywood blockbusters at the moment, so we wouldn’t be surprised if Disney went down this route.
