An Academy Award-nominated filmmaker has shared her picks for the ultimate action film triple bill, urging viewers to experience three cinematic gems in a single evening.
Celine Song earned an Oscar nod for Best Original Screenplay with her directorial debut Past Lives. She has subsequently crafted the romantic comedy Materialists.
Her previous credits include writing for the television series The Wheel of Time.
Her latest picture features Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. The film premiered in the US earlier this year and arrives in British cinemas on August 15.
Materialists follows a driven, young matchmaker in New York City who becomes caught between an ideal romantic prospect and her flawed former partner, reports the Mirror.
Nevertheless, whilst publicising the picture, she paused to champion her top picks from a completely different category. Fortunately for home viewers, all three titles are presently available on Sky Cinema or Now with a films subscription.
When asked to select her ideal film marathon during a chat with Empire magazine, she declared: “I would say I think you should watch Children of Men, Alfonso Cuarón, and then I think you should follow it up with edge of tomorrow by Doug Liman, and then I think you should watch Mad Max Fury Road by George Miller.”
Explaining her choices she goes on to say: “What I love and respect about all three of those movies and why I think they’re perfect companions to each other is because they are great action films where we get to enjoy the parts of cinema that like drives us to go to the cinemas but is also going to have very real political ideologies and beliefs in what we want the world to be and I think that’s what I really love and respect about it.”
She continued: “And the characters are so amazing and it’s actually some of the best written things ever. The direction is insane but it’s not a mindless action thing, it’s always going to have something deeply ideologically interesting and very political and socially significant.”
It appears these selections should prove popular amongst fans whilst also being critically acclaimed, as each film achieved over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Edge of Tomorrow secured 91%, Children of Men obtained 92% whilst Fury Road garnered an outstanding 97%.
For viewers unfamiliar with these three pictures, Children of Men unfolds in 2027, where mankind faces extinction following an 18-year period without births.
When a woman becomes pregnant, a government operative, portrayed by Clive Owen, safeguards her as she represents humanity’s hope for survival.
Edge of Tomorrow follows Tom Cruise’s Captain Cage caught in a temporal loop as he’s compelled to enter combat after extraterrestrial forces assault Earth and threaten human extinction.
He must join forces with Emily Blunt’s fighter to rescue the world. In the film Mad Max Fury Road, Tom Hardy steps into the shoes of the titular character, previously played by Mel Gibson.
Set in a post-apocalyptic world ruled by a tyrant who controls every drop of water in a barren desert, two rebels – one fleeing from grief and the other reaching back to her childhood – emerge as the last glimmer of hope for the few remaining survivors.
Children of Men is streaming on BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime, Sky Cinema and NOW, Edge of Tomorrow and Mad Max Fury Road are streaming on Sky Cinema and NOW.
