Netflix fans will have to hurry if they want to catch a glimpse of the Oscar-winning British war epic, 1917 which is currently still available on the platform but will vanish in just a few days time. The streaming giant has warned fans that the film previously dubbed one of the most “incredible” cinematic productions of “all time” is getting ready to be removed from its site.
Fans will have just over a week to watch the British war film 1917, which was directed by Sam Mendes and smashed many Box Office records back in 2019. Since landing on the streaming site in 2021, it quickly found a warm place in the hearts of fans and became a most-watched feature on Netflix before it was removed in 2022. The film proved to be so popular the first time round, Netflix made an exception and returned it to the platform in May 2024, giving viewers another chance to watch it.
1917, has been available for streaming for almost 12 months and time is very nearly up for the film’s second showing on the digital platform. If history were to repeat itself, the movie could possibly return again in two years time but there’s also a strong probability that it may never come back after two screenings already.
The spine-chilling war epic clambered to the top of Netflix charts for a second time round receiving tremendous acclaim since its original launch.
It follows the haunting story of two British soldiers in the First World War who will stop at nothing in their quest to prevent a doomed offensive as they attempt to cross enemy lines to deliver a message that could save hundreds.
Set in the stunning landscapes of northern France, fans are given an insight into the harsh reality of what life at war was really like, with some viewers saying they found the film to be “gut wrenchingly sad”.
One Rotten Tomatoes reviewer wrote glowing feedback, stating: “If I were to ever recommend a film to anyone, it would most certainly be this every time.
“This film is gut wrenchingly sad, and equally horrifying, though the story is pulled together beautifully. It is a splendidly poetic, cinematic masterpiece, and words simply cannot describe how brilliant it is.”
Another fan commented on the award-winning uniqueness of the production, writing: “The well-paced, continuous shot captures the horrors of war in a very immersive way.”
While another audience member was less impressed with the film’s continuous shots, adding: “My expectation was high from the acclaimed director and period piece. I left the big screen disappointed. The long scenes became a distraction rather than adding to the storytelling. The whole movie felt like one long gimmick.”
A third penned: “MASTERPIECE! Not a single moment is wasted with incredible direction and vision from Sam Mendes and Rodger Deakins, paired with a godlike score from Thomas Newman, making this an unforgettable, emotional, and powerful journey that deserves multiple revisits beyond the first viewing.”
1917, is set to leave Netflix on 30 April.
