When a caring gardener heard that a young mum had been quoted hundreds of pounds for a simple job, he decided to step in.
Mike was shocked when he learned that she had been asked to pay £200 for the garden tidy up. All she needed was for her small lawn to be mowed as the grass had gotten long so needed to be cut to look nice and tidy.
Instead of charging the pricey amount, he gave her a kind surprise. He told the mum he would cut her lawn for free.
The gardener was able to film the transformation for his Garden Yardz Mowing TikTok page. More than 31,000 users on the platform watch Mike’s transformations and more than 4,000 have seen his clip mowing the woman’s lawn for free, so far.
Mike began by cutting the long grass with a lawn mower, working from the edges and moving into the centre. He went around the whole lawn until all the grass had been cut and he finished by mowing up and down in straight lines to make it look neat.
The gardener captioned the most: “Young mother quoted £200 to mow her lawn.” More than 100 TikTok users have liked the clip and several left comments praising Mike.
One said: “The people who quote this need calling out and reporting it’s unbelievable. Well done you.”
Another added: “Bless your heart Mike. Helping hand again. Stay blessed always.” A third commented: “Good job as usual.”
A fourth chimed in: “Well dwell done you are a good egg as we say in Hull.” According to MyBuilder, the price for having your lawn cut in the UK can range from £20 to £45 per hour or between £50 and £150 for a monthly service, depending on factors like lawn size, location, and service frequency.
It’s clear that the young mum was quoted an extortionate amount for a basic job but there are steps you can take to avoid being ripped off by gardeners. Start by researching local gardeners or landscaping companies to understand their reputation and the services they offer.
Check online reviews on platforms like Google, Yelp, or social media, and don’t hesitate to ask friends, neighbours, or community groups for personal recommendations. Gather quotes from at least three different professionals to compare pricing and service offerings.
Be cautious of unusually low quotes, as they may indicate shortcuts or substandard work. Similarly, very high estimates could suggest overcharging.
Ask each gardener for references from previous clients. A trustworthy professional should be happy to share these.
Follow up with the references if you’d like more insight into the quality of their work and reliability. Before any work begins, make sure you have a written agreement in place. This should clearly outline the scope of work, timelines, and total costs.
Finally, avoid paying the full amount upfront. Instead, agree on a staged payment plan or pay the balance only once you’re satisfied with the completed work.
