Why this dog breed has been named the ‘full package’ by vet

Finding the ideal dog can be a challenge, with so many breeds offering different personalities, aesthetics, needs, and quirks. But one veterinarian says there’s a standout that fits just about every lifestyle.

Veterinarian and TikTok creator Amir Anwary, also known as @amirthevet, shared a list of his top five breeds for first-time owners, but specifically dubbed one as the “full package.” This dog adapts to most situations with ease, is quickly trained, and is loving and protective. The winner: the Bernese Mountain dog.

The vet and content creator began their video and said: “This is probably one of the most underrated dog breeds I have ever worked with. They are kind, they are gentle, they are good with children.

“They are intelligent, they are relatively easy to train, and they’re also quite good guard dogs, so they are sort of between a rottweiler and a golden retriever.

“But because they are big (23–27.5 inches tall and 70–115 pounds), they are quite scary.”

Nonetheless, Amir said: “If you are a first-time owner, this is like the full package. I definitely recommend you trying a Bernese Mountain dog.”

According to experts at PetMD, Bernese Mountain dogs are eager to please, which makes them great to train.

They also tend to be patient with children and other pets, making them great family dogs. However, this breed dislikes being left alone and can develop anxiety.

However, single owners can still own this breed, as when “properly socialised to dogs, cats, and people as puppies, a Berner is more adaptable and less likely to develop anxiety as an adult.”

The furry companion also needs to be fed at least twice a day, with proper amounts of fat, protein, and carbohydrates.

PetMD also highlighted that owners do not need to stress about playtime, making them a great choice for new owners who are adapting to caring for pets.

The expert said: “The Bernese Mountain dog is ready to play when encouraged, but they tend to be a calm breed that likes to lie on the couch or in a comfy dog bed.”
