Tourists have declared they’ll “never” return to a popular holiday destination following an undesirable change this year. Flying off to hotter climes is a summer highlight for many people, with guaranteed sunshine, bright blue skies and the tranquil sounds of the ocean taking top priority when choosing a destination.
Some European countries have cemented themselves as firm favourites among British travellers, regularly popping up on holiday wishlists across all age groups. Be it Greece, Spain, France, Italy or Portugal, the continent boasts a wealth of diverse, appealing choices to accommodate every budget and style.
Some vacationers will choose their destination based on the prevalence of clubs and bars, with many eager to capitalise on after-dark entertainment.
This appears to be the case in Albufeira, a seaside resort situated in the southern Algarve region of Portugal.
The city is renowned for its golden beaches and bustling nightlife scene, and it’s favoured for its litany of accommodation options and entertainment for people to enjoy.
Recently, its legendary strip has faced backlash due to overwhelming crowds – a consequence of the resort’s sustained appeal.
One visitor, who works as a DJ in Albufeira, recently posted footage of the congested strip on TikTok, deterring many people from ever revisiting the resort.
The 11-second recording reveals revellers crammed together outside the renowned bars and clubs.
Overlaying the footage, the DJ wrote: “‘iS AlbUFeIrA eVEn BuSy?’ Have you seen the strip.”
The combination of capital letters with lowercase letters is commonly employed on social media to convey a sarcastic tone.
In the caption, he wrote: “How busy is too busy?”
The clip amassed more than 754K views, with fellow TikTok users eager to voice their opinions.
Many people were quick to highlight it appears to be significantly busier this year compared to last year.
One TikTok user said: “Oh my that’s some difference from last July,” while another concurred: “Was nowhere near this last year”.
A third revealed: “I was there on Saturday and never again!”
A fourth said: “Canny be enjoyable that”.
Someone else said: “is this supposed to make you want to go?”
Another TikTok user commented: “Disgusting I can smell the sweat through the screen,” and another simply said: “No thanks.”
Nevertheless, not everyone held this viewpoint or experience.
One person revealed: “It was the perfect amount of busy last week.”
And another wasn’t deterred whatsoever: “Ye looks boss that.”
For those eager to avoid the overwhelming crowds, one TikTok user recommended: “Best time for Albufeira is mid May to end of May if [you] don’t want to deal with this.”
To which the original poster responded: “Spot on.”
Prior to becoming a major holiday destination, Albufeira was once a tranquil fishing village.
Its golden, sandy beaches are diverse with some locations hectic and bustling, while others provide secluded coves near dramatic cliffs.
Despite its reputation for a bustling nightlife, it also serves as a retreat for families and couples seeking a picturesque escape.
