‘Handsome’ Corgi on euthanasia list desperate for home after owner dies | UK | News

He’s mourning the loss of his owner – and desperately needs someone to show him love in his time of need. Poor Rufus was taken in by Oakwood Dog Rescue, in Hull, after his owner was taken into hospital but sadly never made it out.

The woman, who was in her 70s, welcomed the now 10-year-old Corgi into her life when he was just a puppy and considered him to be her best friend. A statement reads: “We don’t normally advertise dogs that are not already in our care however, this handsome boy is Rufus, he is 10 years old and we need to advertise him asap as we don’t believe that he is going to cope very well in a kennel environment.

“He was very much loved and well cared for but unfortunately, the lady recently went into hospital and very sadly didn’t make it out.

“There was no one in place to take Rufus in the event of his mum no longer being around to care for him.”

The charity says it’s not uncommon for pets to “lose their lives” when their owner dies before them as not everyone has a family member able to take them in.

The statement adds: “Unfortunately, the reality is that we hear the same story on a weekly basis and many of these dogs lose their life because there is no one available to take them in.

“Rufus almost had the same ending as he was booked in for euthanasia before we offered him a safe space with us.”

The pooch needs a quiet home as he has only lived with one owner his entire life and wouldn’t be comfortable in a busy family household.

“We could look at rehoming him with older, sensible children 14+ based on the right match,” the statement adds.

“No dogs – although Rufus is none reactive on lead walks, he prefers not to be in the company of other dogs. No cats.”

Rufus, who is up for adoption for £50, is fully vaccinated and will be castrated before adoption.

Commenting on his rehoming post on Facebook, one user said: “I didn’t realise they still euthanise dogs.”

Another user added: “I would offer him a home in a heartbeat if it would be considered to live with other dogs. I’m also a behaviourist.”

A third user said: “Could you maybe contact the Corgi’s breeders they could help or Corgi breed rescue often have waiting lists for people wanting an older dog.”
