Dogs sleep on pillows to send owners ‘adorable message’

It’s no secret that our pets like to relax. For example, many dog owners probably notice their dogs like to sleep and laze around on pillows – but it turns out they do it for a very special reason.

While you may think it’s a comfy place for them to relax, they don’t actually lounge on pillows to get cosy – at least, that’s not the full story. The reason you may often see your pooch cuddle up to your cushions is actually pretty adorable, and it may just bring a tear to your eye if you’re easily moved by your pup.

A video shared by @schmools on TikTok said: “I’ll never be the same after reading that dogs sleep on pillows to be comforted by the smell of their owners.” It may sound too good to be true, but it turns out the theory is right.

There are a few reasons why dogs like to sleep on pillows, but the main ones centre on comfort, security and gaining a bond with their owners. Pillows offer a soft and elevated surface, which can be good for rest, but they also like to smell like their humans.

Being able to feel connected to them makes them feel secure. Not to mention, some dogs may also seek connection or may want to mimic their owner’s sleeping habits.

Why do dogs sleep on pillows?

Soft, warm pillows obviously offer a comfortable spot for dogs, which makes them feel safe. But they also want to feel close to their owners.

A lot of the time, pillows carry the scent of their owner, which can provide a sense of security and comfort for dogs. This is especially the case when they are anxious or feel the want to bond with their human.

Sometimes, pets can even mimic their owners’ sleeping positions, including resting their heads on pillows. This is likely to happen if they observe their human doing so.

Sleeping on a pillow can also be a way for dogs to feel protected and close to their owners. It helps to create a sense of security and bonding.

You may not realise it, but the way your dog is resting is actually super cute. If they’re sleeping peacefully on a pillow, the odds are they want to be close to you.

Since the video was shared on TikTok, lots of people have commented. They’ve been left stunned by how adorable the news is.

One person said: “My dog does this with my dressing gown.” Another added: “My cat has just started doing this.”

A third replied: “We live in a basement flat, and our bedroom is down by the bottom of the outdoor stairs. When we walk down the stairs, we see our boy on our pillows looking out for us.”

A fourth quipped: “You should see my pillows after mine have gotten comfortable.” Meanwhile, one more chimed in with: “Mine sleeps in bed with me snuggled in.”

Lots of people admitted they’ve noticed it, and most seem to think it’s super cute. It seems pets just can’t get enough of their owners, and their pillows.
