Dog trainer shares ‘friendly’ breed he recommends for first-time owners | UK | News

If you’re wondering if you should get a dog, you’ll find no shortage of options of different breeds. And there are many things to take into account. Do you have kids? Do you need a dog to take out on long walks, or don’t you have much time? Do you have allergies?

It’s quite the mountain of considerations, particularly if you’re new to the world of dog ownership – it can be rather daunting.

You may find yourself veering towards a breed that promises an easier ride in the training department as you settle into the dog-owning rhythm.

On TikTok, dog trainer Adam Spivey of @southenddogtraining1, the founder of Southend Dog Training, has been sharing insights online since 2012. In an informative video aimed at those wanting to get a dog, Adam shared which he thinks is the ‘best breed of dog for first-time owners’.

He laid it out: “It’s a Golden Retriever. Absolute epitome of a gentle dog. Intelligent and friendly, with just about everyone and everything. And it’s active enough that it can go pretty much anywhere with you, if that’s what you want.”

Famed for their intelligence and calm demeanour, Golden Retrievers are often brilliant with kids. With the right mix of socialisation as a puppy, they mesh seamlessly into families.

However, it’s important to do your own research before you bring a larger dog breed into the family, as they have their own considerations.

If you’re looking for a more laid-back canine companion, Adam recommends considering a Greyhound, as they are “one of the easiest dogs on the planet to train”. They are very “low maintenance” and have “very little exercise requirements”, although he stressed the importance of getting dogs out for fresh air and exercise.

Greyhounds are known for being one of the most relaxed dog breeds around and also have a lower risk of becoming overweight. According to the Greyhound trust, they are perfectly content with two 20-minute walks a day.

Other breeds that are suitable for first-time dog owners, which Adam mentioned, include Newfoundland dogs, Leonberger, Labrador Retriever, Cockapoo, and Labradoodles. Adam also mentioned pugs, as they are “one of the friendliest dogs on this planet”, but acknowledged that they can be prone to health issues.

It’s essential to do your own research when it comes to dog breeds, as this is only based on opinion. Consult a professional if you need specific advice.
