If cleaning the patio is at the top of your to-do list this weekend, one cheap hack could be the answer. Experts have recommended a 59p ingredient to clean patios without any harsh chemicals or specialist pressure washers — instead, all you need is some elbow grease.
Paving experts have recommended a bicarbonate of soda hack for those who want an eco-friendly solution that’s also insanely cheap. The solution acts as a mild abrasive which helps to break down tough deposits, such as stubborn dirt, grime, and stains, while also reducing the risk that plants and outdoor materials get damaged by high-pressure jets.
RF Paving wrote on its website: “For those who are conscious about the environment, there are eco-friendly alternatives to clean your patio. A basic combination of bicarbonate of soda and water can clean your patio without resorting to harsh chemicals.”
To make the concoction, create a paste by using equal parts bicarbondate of soda and vinegar, which can be used on concrete or pavers.
Bicarbonate of soda is available at Sainsbury’s for 59p.
Alternatively, bicarbonate soda can be used on its own and dissolved into water, with a ratio of one to five tablespoons per 10 litres of water, depending on the degree of soiling.
Before you begin, make sure to remove loose dirt and moss with a brush, and remove the debris. Then pour the solution over the slabs, let it sit for an hour, and then scrub the surface before rinsing with clear water.
For really tough areas, the steps may need to be repeated.
Because the solution can react with certain plants, homeowners should take care to move planters away, cover garden plants and keep vinegar away from vegetation. Cleaners should also wear protective gear, such as gloves and safety goggles.
Another cheap and environmentally friendly approach is using biodegradable soap – it can be dissolved in lukewarm water and applied to the surface in the same manner.
