‘Backpackers blocked my driveway with three cars – but I got revenge’

A doctor who was fed up after a group of backpackers parked three large cars on his private driveway got the “perfect” revenge.

Finding safe places to park can be tricky but everyone ought to know parking on someone else’s property is off limits – especially if your parked car means they’re unable to access their own home or land.

Unfortunately, one doctor who lives in a semi-rural setting on a large ranch-style property in Montana was faced with a hoard of large cars blocking his driveway for a number of days while the drivers went off on a picturesque hike – with no concern or realisation as to the parking fiasco they’d left behind.

The doctor’s home is nestled in expansive grounds, some of which he leases out to people who “know what they’re doing”, so when he moved in, he had the boundaries properly assessed and marked out by a fence. There’s also “no trespassing” signs.

His driveway is long and private, and accessed via a main road. When he was confronted with the cars blocking it, it meant he was unable to access his home by car, leaving him around three quarters of a mile away from his house and having to walk.

The driveway has “drainage ditches on either side” so he was unable to drive around or past them. He considered towing them out of the way but was worried about getting into trouble, so called the local police for advice – and to act as a “witness” to the event.

After getting the go ahead from the local sheriff, he still waited to see if the cars’ owners would come back soon to collect their vehicles. After three days, he was at the end of his tether.

On Reddit, he explained: “I’d had enough. I drove out to the cars with some wooden cribbing, and a high-lift jack, and jacked the cars up, put cribbing down, and left the cars there, wheels up in the air.

“It took two more days before anyone showed up. Eight people showed up, angry because their cars had been essentially booted..

“They really didn’t like it when I told them they owed me for parking, and damage done to the road, because they blocked it.”

The owners of the cars insisted they didn’t realise they’d parked on private property, despite the many signs and the closed gate they had to open and pass through in order to park on the doctor’s driveway, and threatened to call the police over the doctor’s towing antics.

Because the doctor had already informed the police of the situation, the drivers’ “claims didn’t get far”. A police officer, known to the doctor, took the drivers back to the public road and called a tow truck “which took four hours to arrive”.

A month later, the doctor received notice the drivers were suing him, so he countersued – and won. The judge “ordered them to pay for resurfacing the road (again), plus storage and punitives.”

The doctor added: “It took a year, but I got the payment from the third hiker last week. I decided that the money will go to help pay for my annual summer BBQ for the county’s emergency responders”.

In the comments section, one person said: “In the country, or the city or in the suburbs: what kind of idiot blocks a driveway??!”

Another said: “This was one of the most satisfying posts I’ve read on here in a long time!” A third added: “What a heartwarming revenge story!”

But others questioned whether the story was the result of some creative fiction writing.
