Ants will stay away if you use 1 natural ingredient you probably already own

As summer settles in and gardens burst into bloom, one unwelcome guest often makes an appearance. But according to gardening experts at Yell, you may not need to resort to chemicals to keep them at bay, in fact, the solution might already be sitting in your kitchen.

Searches for “how to get rid of ants” have skyrocketed by 270% in the past month, according to Google Trends, as homeowners across the UK seek natural ways to combat the seasonal surge in ant activity. The good news is that a simple, natural deterrent could do the trick.

Lemon juice is rich in citric acid, which disrupts the scent trails ants rely on to navigate.

Experts suggest mixing lemon juice with water and spraying the solution around windowsills, doors, and any visible ant trails. This not only deters the pests but also leaves a fresh, clean fragrance behind.

Another powerful and pleasant-smelling alternative is peppermint oil. Just a few drops mixed with water can create an effective spray that ants find overwhelming.

It doubles as a natural air freshener for your home, making it both practical and pleasant.

In addition to citrus and peppermint, common cupboard staples like vinegar, sugar, and baking soda can be surprisingly effective. An equal mix of vinegar and water can be sprayed around the garden to create a natural ant barrier, while sugar and baking soda can be used to create DIY ant traps.

Yell’s gardening experts emphasise that small changes and natural remedies can make a big difference in managing garden pests. “With just a few everyday items, homeowners can protect their gardens and homes from ants without the need for harsh chemicals,” a spokesperson said.

As the summer season unfolds, it’s a perfect time to raid the kitchen cupboard before heading to the garden centre. Nature, it seems, already has the answers.
