State pensioners getting a weekly income top-up to £227.10 from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will get an extra £150 cash boost this year.
The Government has confirmed it is expanding its Warm Home Discount Scheme this year, allowing more than six million households to benefit from discounted energy bills this winter. The Warm Home Discount Scheme provides those who are eligible with a one-off £150 discount off electricity bills, which is applied directly by electricity suppliers. There are several ways to qualify for the scheme, but in England, Wales and Scotland, you will be eligible providing you get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit.
Pension Credit provides extra cash to help with living costs to those in England, Scotland and Wales who have reached State Pension age and are on a low income.
The benefit tops up your weekly income to £227.10 if you live alone, or your joint weekly income to £346.60 if you are a couple. This weekly payment top-up is known as the ‘Guarantee Credit’ element of Pension Credit, so if you get this you will also get the £150 Warm Home Discount this winter.
The DWP says: “The Warm Home Discount Scheme is a one-off £150 discount off your electricity bill. If you’re eligible, your electricity supplier will apply the discount to your bill. The money is not paid to you.
“You’ll usually get the discount automatically if you’re eligible. You only need to apply if you’re on a low income in Scotland – contact your energy supplier to apply.
“You may be able to get the discount on your gas bill instead if your supplier provides you with both gas and electricity and you’re eligible. Contact your supplier to find out.
“There are different ways to qualify for the Warm Home Discount Scheme depending on where you live. If you live in England and Wales you qualify if you either:
- get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit
- are on a low income and have high energy costs
“If you live in Scotland you qualify if you either:
- get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit
- are on a low income in Scotland and meet your energy supplier’s criteria for the scheme
“The Warm Home Discount scheme is not available in Northern Ireland.”
The Warm Home Discount Scheme will reopen in October 2025 and the £150 discount will automatically be applied to your electricity bill by your energy suppliers this winter if you qualify. All of the following suppliers energy suppliers are part of the scheme:
