NatWest is set to close 19 bank branches in May to account for customers making fewer in-person visits. The shuttered branches will join the banking giant’s larger list of at least 56 locations to close in 2025.
This move forms part of a broader trend, with thousands of branches already closed in recent years. According to consumer group Which?, more than 6,300 bank and building society branches have closed since January 2015, equating to 53 closures on average every month. NatWest Group, which comprises NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank, has closed 1,431 branches – the most of any banking group. Lloyds Banking Group, comprised of Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, has shut down 1,321 sites.
Barclays is the individual bank that has reduced its network the most, with 1,236 branches now closed.
A statement on NatWest’s website reads: “Banking has changed dramatically in recent years, with an increased demand for mobile and online services, as our customers benefit from a faster and easier way to bank. Closing a branch is a decision we take very seriously.
“We know it can affect those less confident with alternatives we offer. We’ll always work hard to guide and support you through the changes and find the best way to serve you from now on.”
