The British high street’s woes have seen a series of store closures across the nation. As well as popular fashion brands, supermarkets and fast food chains, physical banks have also taken a hit. Big names, including Halifax and Lloyds, are amongst the various banks that have announced a number of branch closures set for this year and the next.
Between the two banks, up to 233 branches are expected to be shut permanently by next year in bids to slash costs and become more digital. The banking group, which is made up of Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland, says the move comes as more customers are opting to use their mobile devices for banking instead of banking in person.
The group also shared that all workers at the impacted branches will be offered job roles elsewhere in the company, as part of the decision.
A spokesperson for the company previously said: “Over 20 million customers are using our apps for on-demand access to their money, and customers have more choice and flexibility than ever for their day-to-day banking.
“Alongside our apps, customers can also use telephone banking, visit a community banker or use any Halifax, Lloyds or Bank of Scotland branch, giving access to many more branches.
“Customers can also do their everyday banking at over 11,000 branches of the Post Office or in a Banking Hub.”
Closures this year started in May, with Lloyds pulling down the shutters at 18 of its branches and Halifax closing 12. June will see 14 more closures across both banks, with more to come again in October.
