The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued a warning to anyone with a CV as it urges people to keep themselves and their details safe. DWP said in a new alert on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday that “fraudsters look for personal details to steal your identity”.
A voiceover on a video it shared said: “Protect yourself from online identity fraud. When sharing your CV online, remember scammers use your personal details to commit identity fraud.
“Stay safe by not including your full address, date of birth, or National Insurance number. Recruiters do not need these details at the application stage – but fraudsters do. To find out more visit Action Fraud.”
The alert comes after an earlier DWP warning, with people advised to “protect themselves” from another way scammers can access their details. On Friday DWP said: “Protect yourself from online fraud. Keep your sensitive information off social media and out of Direct Messages.”
The Government department went on to urge people not to share their full name and/or date of birth, National Insurance number, and/or any answers to their security questions.
If fraudsters get their hand on your details, they could steal your identity – and take cash from your bank account. Further guidance from Action Fraud recommends you make sure your computer has up-to-date anti-virus software and a firewall installed, and adds that many scams start with a phishing email.
