A Formula 1 fan has voiced her dismay over a particular aspect of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday.
The event saw McLaren driver, Landon Norris, clinch victory on home soil on a rain-drenched afternoon in Northamptonshire, with his teammate, Oscar Pistori and Nico Hulkenberg also securing spots on the podium. However, amidst the jubilation of the race – which commanded ticket prices ranging from £70 to £329 for single-day entry – TikTok user @f1girlGB found herself shelling out an additional hefty sum just to park her vehicle.
In a video shared from the public car park at the venue, a sign indicated that payments were required before exiting, listing the parking charges for each day from Thursday through to Sunday.
Although the main race was held on Sunday, fans are welcomed from Thursday onwards to take part in a variety of events including meeting team members, exploring the track’s museum.
Friday’s schedule includes drivers’ practice sessions, followed by Saturday’s qualifying rounds leading up to the grand finale on Sunday.
Attending all four days seems to come with a steep price tag, as the TikTok user’s video revealed the exorbitant parking fees detailed on the sign: Thursday and Friday parking at £80 each; and Saturday and Sunday parking at a whopping £130 per day.
The clip showcasing the car park’s sign has since garnered a staggering 900,000 views, a remarkable feat considering the fan’s modest following of 314 TikTok users. It also sparked a wave of disgruntled comments from thousands of viewers.
“There’s me thinking I couldn’t afford the actual tickets when actually I couldn’t even afford the parking!”, one individual quipped in response.
Another expressed their frustration: “Exactly why I won’t go to Silverstone F1, but will go abroad to watch F1.” A third commented: “Silverstone is now just a rip off. I don’t know how people can afford it, when they have no money to pay bills etc.”
Whilst a fourth TikTok user criticised: “That’s actually insane and totally unjustified. Things just die on the vine in this country because of price gouging and corporate greed. In a few years they’ll be complaining that the crowds aren’t as big any more and they’ll wonder why.”
And a fifth reflected: “Must put a lot of people off, but they still seem to have lots of cars there, so people must be willing to pay those extortionate prices, fair enough. Guess I’ll never go to Silverstone.”
Offering a money-saving tip, however, another person argued: “If you book online in advance its £50 a day or £150 for the full weekend.”
Whilat second detailed their experience: “Local schools charged £50 for the weekend, which was about a 30 minute walk and much quicker than queuing out of the car park.”
If you are planning on visiting and prepare in advance, this could definitely be a more affordable solution.
