Lord of the Rings by English author and scholar J. R. R. Tolkien was the choice of Martin.

Lord of the Rings is a high fantasy sci-fi series that is set in Middle-earth and it follows Frodo Baggins and others of the fantasy world as they go on a journey to destroy the One Ring and defeat its maker, the Dark Lord Sauron.

The Lord of the Rings series is renowned as one of the best books of all time so it is no surprise that sci-fi writer Martin would admire it.

The series of books were adapted into film in the early 2000s and starred Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom and Cate Blanchett among many others.

He explained why he enjoyed rereading specific books time and time again.

Martin said: “In my mind, the very best books are the ones that you can reread over and over again and everytime you return to them you find new things in them and enjoy them just as much.”

When relfecting on his favourite books, Martin said he’d read thousands and added: “Ever since I was a kid I’ve been a guy who’s had his nose in a book.”

He also expressed a line that he wrote in Game of Thrones, that being his view that to read means to live multiple lives and not to read means to live only one life, referencing many of the world’s that reading had given him access to, such as Middle Earth.
