A number of towns in Cambridgeshire failed to impress a YouTuber who claimed one “broken” and “mouldy” place was somewhere “nobody actually wants to be”. The content creator behind the YouTube channel “Turdtowns” was particularly critical of Littleport, which he couldn’t decide if it was a town or a village.
In a video called ‘The hillbilly towns of Cambridgeshire have no hills’, he labelled the number four location a ‘little pus-filled town’ and said it ‘could well be the largest village in England or it could possibly be the most pointless town in the country’. The YouTuber claimed that the sole purpose of the town was ‘to house people who couldn’t afford Ely or Cambridge’.
The insults didn’t stop there with the video creator commentating that there was a negative atmosphere in the settlement where ‘the people feel like they’ve failed at life’. He also cited that one of the main reasons it was on his top five list was due to the high crime rate, which he said has 100 crimes per 1,000 residents.
According to Cambridgeshire Police, there were 357 recorded crimes in the first six months of this year, compared to 310 recorded crimes in the first six months of 2023.
A spokesman from the force said: “Examples of our work to tackle the issues that matter most to the community in Littleport, and East Cambridgeshire as a whole, can be found on our Policing East Cambridgeshire Facebook page.”
The YouTuber brutally joked that the coronavirus may have “altered their brains and turned them into violent individuals”.
He added that it was his main gripe with the place, as “nothing else noteworthy ever happens here”.
“This place is so boring and completely lacking in character,” he said.
“I believe it used to be more important a very long time ago as it used to be a port before the river was drained and made much smaller.”
“With Littleport being just a couple of metres above sea level, it would make perfect sense to let the river swallow it whole one day, and the whole world would lose nothing.”
The district council leapt to the defence of the town, disagreeing with a lot of what the content creator said in the video.
A spokesman from the East Cambridgeshire District Council said: “Littleport is a thriving, vibrant market town ideally situated north of Ely and home to a rapidly growing community of over 10,000 people.
“It is rich in cultural history, with its own working marina, schools, a new educational academy, sports facilities, and a successful business hub. Littleport is a happy middle ground between the peace and quiet of a village and the buzz of a bigger town or city.
“An appealing aspect of the town might be the house prices. According to Rightmove, the average house price in Littleport is £291,224, compared to £373,709 across the country, or an eyewatering £571,605 in Cambridge. The area has a strong sense of community. Many people are happy to live in town, praising its local events, shops, and social activities.
“The town has a rich cultural heritage as well. Founded by King Canute, over the years it has been host to the Littleport Riots, was the birthplace of William Harley, whose son launched the Harley-Davidson motor company, and at one stage housed the iconic Burberry clothing factory.
“The town benefits from a main line train station with connections to Cambridge, King’s Lynn, and London, as well as access to the A10 road. Its rural location is ideal for those wishing to enjoy the great outdoors. Located close to Welney Washes, there are plenty of green spaces to enjoy, including Peacock’s Meadow community gardens, or go for a riverside ramble, taking in the Swan on the River and the town’s very own working boat marina. Littleport has lots and lots to offer, plus with its countryside location and good commuter links means people there can work hard in the week and play hard at the weekends.”
A local volunteer who did not want to be named said Littleport was a quiet town with plenty to do for locals and visitors.
They said: “The town definitely has an older demographic, but it is a nice community and is a safe place for people to live.”
Emma, 21, a florist at Littleport florist, Flowers by Chloe, said the comments made by the YouTuber were ‘really harsh.’
She added, “Littleport is a nice town. It isn’t nice to say those things about someone’s hometown because this place has a lot going for it. You can walk around here with no problem, and the people are really friendly.”
