Gardener’s tip to prevent key mistake when watering your plants

A gardener has urged all homer gardeners to make sure they’re watering their plants right, as he claims most people water plants ‘the wrong way’.

Whether you prefer indoor or outdoor plants, you will be aware of how important it is to see to each plant’s need, whether it prefers to be in the gleaming sun or chill in the shadow. But one of the most important factors to be aware of is how to best water each of your plants.

To help, one garderner named Joe, known online from ‘Joesgarden’, has shared the go-to way people should water their potted plants, whether they’re indoor or outdoor plants.

Showing himself watering a potted plant with a watering can, he told his viewers: “If you water your potted plants like this, then you may be causing more harm than good.”

He went on to explain: “Containers are a great way to grow crops if you’re renting or only have limited space. But be careful when you’re watering your pots from the top. Although the soil may seem saturated, dig a little deeper and it can often be bone dry.”

He explained in the caption of the video: “Most containers will have a slight gap between the soil and inner side of the pot, this is especially the case with plastic pots. As water will always travel down the path of least resistance, it will funnel down the sides of the pot and out the drainage holes in the bottom. This can sometimes leave the middle of the root ball bone dry.”

“To combat this and making sure that your soil stays nice and saturated to get water to the deepest roots of the plant he said that you should consider changing up the way you water potted plants,” he told his viewers.

“So instead, try filling up a large tray or container with water and place your plants straight in,” he said. “The soil will absorb up the water through the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot, helping to give your plant an even drink all the way throughout.”

If you have any larger containers that you aren’t able to lift up or move, Joe said: “For larger containers, bury a small pot [with holes in the bottom] in the middle and water directly into this. This will get the water straight to the roots.”

He went on to say that you can continue to water with a watering can if you prefer to do so, but to make sure that the water has gone where you want it to go. You can also interchange the two methods with every time you water the plants.
