EDF slashing costs and claims customers can save £851 | Personal Finance | Finance

EDF is offering households a £500 discount on the installation of air source heat pumps in a summer sale designed to boost uptake of the eco-friendly technology.

The offer, which runs until midnight on August 10, comes on top of estimated annual energy bill savings of £351 – meaning a total potential saving of £851 for families who make the switch.

The deal means a full air source heat pump system – including design and installation – can now start from as little as £4,080 after applying the £7,500 government Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant.

EDF is also offering a special “Heat Pump and Save Tracker” tariff that removes the standing charge for a full year, contributing to the £351 annual saving.

In addition, users benefit from six hours of discounted zero-carbon electricity each day during off-peak periods (4am–7am and 1pm–4pm).

How do heat pumps work?

Air source heat pumps work by drawing in heat from the outside air and using it to warm the home and provide hot water.

Even when it’s cold outside, they can extract ambient heat and transfer it indoors via a process similar to that used in a fridge, but in reverse.

The systems are most efficient when used in well-insulated homes and can be more than three times as energy-efficient as traditional gas boilers.

EDF’s push comes amid efforts to move households away from gas heating in the drive towards net zero and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The firm is promoting the technology through its dedicated EDF Heat Pumps arm, formerly CB Heating, one of the UK’s longest-established heat pump specialists.

Philippe Commaret, Managing Director of Customers at EDF, said: “We want to help as many households as possible experience the benefits of switching to more efficient heating systems, but understand for many the upfront costs can be daunting.

“That’s why we’re thrilled to offer customers better prices on heat pumps this summer.

“With EDF Heat Pumps’ accredited network of trusted installers on hand to provide a seamless and high-quality service, now is an ideal time for customers to start preparing their homes for the cooler months ahead.”

The company also offers a £250 referral bonus for every successful installation resulting from a customer recommendation.

EDF Heat Pumps – which was recently recognised as a Which? Trusted Trader – says it has installed thousands of units across the UK and holds a five-star rating on Trustpilot.

 How much can households save?

The typical £351 saving is based on the assumption that a heat pump with a coefficient of performance (CoP) of 3.1 replaces a 94% efficient gas boiler heating a home using 11,500kWh of gas annually.

This includes £164 in energy efficiency savings and £187 from the removal of the daily electricity standing charge under EDF’s tracker tariff.

While the cheapest systems start at just over £4,000 with the grant, additional costs can apply depending on a property’s heating system and whether radiators need upgrading.

EDF’s offer forms part of a broader trend in the energy sector, with companies offering more incentives for households to switch to low-carbon heating amid ongoing government pressure to cut emissions and improve energy efficiency.
