BBC iPlayer quietly adds ‘scariest movie ever made’ | Films | Entertainment

Horror fans will be able to stream the “greatest horror of all time” completely for free.

The Shining is a chilling adaptation of Stephen King’s 1977 novel. Released in 1980, it remains an all time favourite for horror fanatics who have branded it one of the “scariest movies ever made.”

It follows Jack Torrance (played by Jack Nicholson) who becomes a winter caretaker at a hotel in the secluded Overlook Hotel in the Rocky Mountains. With no escape for his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and son Danny (Danny Lloyd), they find themselves cut off from the world.

Jack’s son Danny becomes plagued with psychic premonitions which become more “disturbing” as dark hotel secrets soon become unravelled.

Created by the legendary Stanley Kubrick, the film will now be available to stream for free on BBC iPlayer, and it’s sooner than you think. Fans can watch from July 11.

A synopsis reads: “When writer Jack Torrance takes a job as winter caretaker at a hotel high in the Rocky Mountains, the accumulated power of evil deeds committed at the hotel begins to drive him mad. Now there may be no escape for his wife and son in this story of madness, memory and family violence.”

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, the film boasts a score of 83% as the reviews continue to pour in. One person wrote: “The greatest horror film of all time.”

Another said: “A masterpiece that stands the test of time.” A third penned: “45 years have passed and this ranks as one of the scariest movies ever made.”

Another horror fan added: “The Shining is psychological horror at its best. Stanley Kubrick crafts a film that isn’t just scary, it’s suffocating. Every shot is carefully planned, and every silence is unnerving.”

Over on Google reviews, one viewer commented: “The Shining is not only my favorite horror movie, but it is also one of my favorite films of any genre of all time.”

Another echoed: “The film is a true masterpiece. If you like a thriller than isn’t full of jump scares but instead gets in your head , and comes off as both insane and believable you will love this film.”

The Shining is coming to BBC iPlayer on July 11.
