Grout won’t get stained if you use 1 household item

Grimy, discoloured grout is one of the fastest ways to make a bathroom look dirty, even if the tiles themselves are spotless. Whether it’s a creeping grey caused by mould and mildew or strange yellow and orange tones from a build-up of shampoo and shower gels, stained grout can feel impossible to deal with.

But according to cleaning expert Kerry Hale from Mira Showers, one simple household item can make all the difference, and keep grout protected from future stains.

The magic item is baking soda and, paired with hydrogen peroxide, it is gentle, effective and budget-friendly. Unlike harsh chemical cleaners, it won’t damage tiles or release strong fumes.

Baking soda is a mild abrasive that works to lift grime and neutralise odours, while hydrogen peroxide offers strong whitening and disinfecting properties, like bleach, but safer for regular use.

To clean grout, start by mixing the two into a thick paste.

Using an old toothbrush or small scrub brush, apply the paste generously to the grout lines, making sure to fully coat any stained or discoloured areas.

Let it sit for at least five minutes so the ingredients can break down any mould, mildew or soap scum.

Then, scrub with a firm-bristled brush and wipe away the residue with a damp cloth or mop. If stubborn stains remain, simply repeat the process.

But cleaning is only half the battle. Once your grout is gleaming, Hale recommends maintaining a few simple habits to keep it that way.

Wiping down tiles and grout with a towel or squeegee after every shower removes excess moisture and prevents mould from taking hold.

Ensuring good ventilation, either by opening a window or using an extractor fan, will also help the bathroom dry out faster.

This natural method doesn’t just restore discoloured grout, it can also prevent future build-up if used regularly.

With no need for expensive specialist products, this DIY solution offers a fast, affordable and non-toxic way to refresh your bathroom and maintain that fresh, just-cleaned look for longer.
