Netflix’s ‘charming’ sci-fi movie is surprisingly perfect for Barbie fans | Films | Entertainment

Netflix is currently showcasing an original science fiction flick that fans of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie will find irresistible.

The eccentric Mexican film, released this week, has drawn unexpected comparisons to the 2023 blockbuster hit due to its timely feminist themes and unique tone.

Our Times is a time-travel film with a difference, following the journey of a married couple, Nora (portrayed by pop sensation Lucero) and Hector (Benny Ibarra), who have been engrossed in a top-secret project for years.

Set in the year 1966, their groundbreaking invention propels them forward to the year 2025, where they find themselves stranded due to a malfunctioning transducer.

Ensure this offbeat sci-fi treasure doesn’t go unnoticed this week, as it has already garnered some impressive reviews from critics.

Polygon has lauded the film, dubbing it “Netflix’s best new science fiction movie, a romance that pairs well with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has a new spin on an old time travel plot.”

They continued: “Our Times’ fresh twist on a familiar format is the best part of the movie.

“The intimate, personal approach to the impact of time travel turns Our Times into an examination of how women are often pushed to prioritise relationships above their own goals.

“Rather than obsessing over the idea of fixing the past, Our Times is a bittersweet meditation about personal growth and the way relationships shift with circumstances.”

Decider also gave high praise to leading actress Lucero, calling her “undeniably charming”.

“With a crisp 90-minute runtime, Our Times is a mostly tight and engaging movie that puts a fun twist on the typical time travel story as it sends its characters from a not-too-distant past to an even more familiar future: our present day,” they added.

“Everyone in Our Times puts in strong acting performances that are bolstered by well-crafted and convincing sets, effects, and props, as well as a strong and often amusing script.”

Inverse also raved about the film’s timely themes, writing: “Nora’s journey of self-discovery is both a joy to watch and a much-needed reminder the modern world might not be so terrible after all.”

They also called it the “zaniest time travel movie of the year”.

If you loved Barbie and are on the lookout for more fantastical adventures with feminist themes, look no further than this quirky new comedy from Mexico.

Our Times is available to stream on Netflix.
