If you have a pet, you’ll know they can sometimes do all sorts of quirky things. After all, dogs can be super playful and excited, which can cause them to display all sorts of behaviour.
However, if you’ve ever noticed your pooch rolls around on the floor a lot, there may be a reason why they’re doing it – and it’s not to play, according to a TikTiok video. An account known as Rory Gunner Millie said there’s actually an “adorable” reason why dogs do this, and you’ll never believe what they could be trying to tell you in the process.
The post read: “Did you know some dogs take part in a thing called Contentment Ceremony? When they’ve really enjoyed their food, they basically roll around to show how much they’ve enjoyed it.”
Since being shared, the quirky dog fact has left people stunned. People think it’s amazing that their pets do this to tell them a cute message.
The video has been viewed thousands of times since it was shared, and people were quick to comment too. Dozens chimed in to share their thoughts.
It looks as though may dogs appear to do a little happy roll after food. Many owners find the habit totally adorable, with some having their own names for it.
One person said: “We call it ‘joy rolling’. My dog also does it when he is particularly happy with the walk we have taken him on, or when he has been given a particularly good treat.”
Another added: “My fluffy ball likes to clean his chops along the sofa. You know he’s enjoyed it when he does that.”
A third replied: “It’s actually a ritual to the food and toy Gods. If they don’t do it, no food or toys will come.” Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: “I call this the feeling good factor.”
Someone else also chimed in with: “One of mine does this every night. It’s never after food though. He’ll get up from laying down to do it.”
What is a contentment ceremony?
If you’ve never heard of it before, a contentment ceremony is the term used to refer to a dog’s behaviour when they are feeling happy, relaxed and content. They often do it after experiencing something positive, like eating.
Usually, they tend to roll around, rub their face in the ground, wag their tail, grunt or display relaxed body language. When they expose their bellies, it implies they are relaxed and trust the people they’re around.
A wagging tail is also a good sign that your pooch is happy, and they also tend to grunt softly when they feel at ease too. Dogs can also do a few other things to show you they’re happy.
For example, they may convey a playful expression or bring you their fluffy toy. When dogs do these things they are often trying to tell you something.
They usually do it to communicate their happiness and contentment to their owners and other dogs. In other words, they’re sending you a pretty cute message.
