Top family names with unclaimed estates in UK | Personal Finance | Finance

As of April last year, nearly 6,000 estates across the UK remain unclaimed. This could equate to a staggering £1,674,281,307 lying dormant in property value alone until the rightful heirs can be identified, according to law firm Weightmans.

These unclaimed estates may also include assets, savings, heirlooms and potentially life-altering windfalls. While the exact contents of each estate are unknown, the names of the deceased are made public in an attempt to locate their next of kin and beneficiaries. The government maintains a comprehensive list of all the unclaimed estates in the UK, which is freely accessible to examine on its website.

Certain surnames appear more frequently than others, with ‘Smith’ topping the list a remarkable 129 times, according to Elite Realty Invest.

‘Jones’ is the second most prevalent surname in unclaimed estates, with 86 awaiting rightful claimants, based on the latest government data. Other common surnames and the number of estates they have unclaimed include:

  • Taylor – 54
  • Brown – 50
  • Williams – 45
  • Johnson – 40
  • Davies – 38
  • Evans – 35
  • Thomas – 33
  • Roberts – 30

Unclaimed estates are retained by the Crown for up to 30 years, during which relatives can lodge a claim to retrieve what is rightfully theirs.

Thousands of estates remain unclaimed due to people passing away without a will, without a next of kin or if their beneficiaries cannot be located.

The UK government’s list provides detailed information on each deceased individual with an unclaimed estate, including previous names, potential locations of next of kin, and even banking information.

If you identify a potential relative on this list, you may be eligible to claim the estate by providing evidence of your relationship to the deceased.

Property expert and Elite Realty Invest founder, Darren Gallagher, encourages people to explore the list. He said: “Most people don’t know they could be the rightful heir to an estate, especially if a distant relative died without a will.

“We see this time and time again – properties, cash, assets – all left in limbo because nobody thought to check. This isn’t just a loophole – it’s people’s legacy.”
