Netflix about to remove 1 of best ever Christmas movies | Films | Entertainment

This 2000 Christmas classic, starring Jim Carrey, is leaving the platform in a matter of days. How the Grinch Stole Christmas follows The Grinch, played by Carrey, who resides outside the town of Whoville. The people of Whoville love Christmas but The Grinch hates the people and the holiday. When he meets Cindy, a resident who tries to befriend the Grinch, in the hope of making him love Christmas.

The film’s synopsis reads: “In this live-action adaptation of the beloved children’s tale by Dr. Seuss, the reclusive green Grinch (Carrey) decides to ruin Christmas for the cheery citizens of Whoville. Reluctantly joined by his hapless dog, Max, the Grinch comes down from his mountaintop home and sneaks into town to swipe everything holiday-related from the Whos. However, the bitter grump finds a hitch in his plans when he encounters the endearing Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen).”

How the Grinch Stole Christmas was directed by Ron Howard and won an Academy Award for Best Makeup.

A reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes said the film was “hands down the best Christmas movie”.

However, the critics only rate the film at 49%, with the critics consensus stating: “Jim Carrey shines as the Grinch. Unfortunately, it’s not enough to save this movie. You’d be better off watching the TV cartoon.”

The popular 2018 cartoon of the movie, The Grinch, is also leaving the platform on June 1.

Critics rate this version at 60%, which is slightly better than the Carrey version.

One reviewer said: “Overall The Grinch suffers the curse experienced by many films, in that it is good and entertaining but ultimately only ‘good enough‘ or ‘reasonably entertaining’. Jokes land generally well, but softly.

The cartoon version is largely aimed at children but one reviewer said: “the best adaptation of the grinch”.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas will leave Netlfix on June 1.
