Santander will close 24 branches in June as it prepares to shut almost 100 sites across the UK this year and move towards digital. Three branches will close in Northern Ireland, five will go in Scotland, three will shut in Wales, and England will lose the most with 13 leaving the high street.

This year’s 95 closures starting from June will put 750 jobs at risk of redundancy and leave the bank with 349 sites in the UK, with 290 as full-service, and five as work cafes. Reduced hours will be in operation at 36 sites, while 18 branches will go counter-free as part of nationwide changes. Santander attributed the shift to changing customer behaviours – digital transactions increased by 63% since 2019, and branch transactions reduced by 61%.

A Santander UK spokesperson said: “As customer behaviour changes, we are ensuring that our branches remain fit for the future.

“Our new combination of full-service branches, alongside work cafes, counter-free branches and reduced hours branches, aims to provide the right balance between digital banking and face-to-face money management and guidance.

“Closing a branch is always a very difficult decision and we spend a great deal of time assessing where and when we do this and how to minimise the impact it may have on our customers.”

From June 30, the majority of Santander’s reduced-hours branches will be open three days a week, either Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.30am to 3pm, or Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9.30am to 3pm and Saturdays from 9.30am to 12.30pm.

Eighteen sites will become counter-free from June 16, but staff will offer face-to-face support if needed, with an average of eight workers.
