A savvy traveller has given three tips on how you can get cheaper flights and beat ‘airline price hikes.’
Booking a holiday is an exciting task but you might feel let down by expensive flight prices. Nicole, who posts travel and lifestyle content on social media, has shared what you can do to avoid costly flights.
The mum-of-two also explained how airlines set prices. She uploaded a video on TikTok to give some useful information.
Nicole said: “If you want to save money on booking flights you first need to know how the airline pricing works, how you can beat the price hikes. Airlines use something called dynamic pricing.
“They adjust the prices based on demand, the season and how many seats are left. Obviously these prices vary whether it’s like school summer holidays or not. If you’re like us and you can only travel in the school holidays, these are the things you can do to try and beat this.”
1. Set price alerts
The first tip Nicole recommends to everyone is to set price alerts. You can do this on various sites, including Skyscanner and Kayak.
This allows you to track a certain flight that you are interested in and you will be sent an email when the price of that flight has dropped. Price alerts further tell you if that price is high for that particular time, according to Nicole.
She added: “It [can] literally tell you this flight is 30 per cent more than it usually is at this time. That literally tells you to just hold off for a bit.”
2. Be flexible with dates
The travel fan’s next tip is to be flexible with the dates you fly on. She pointed out that sometimes it can even be cheaper to go on an eight day holiday than a seven because the “prices on that day 8 are so much cheaper” and can “save you hundreds of pounds.”
When looking at flight comparison websites, she advises to look “for the whole time” as it could be “miles cheaper” to go on holiday for six nights instead of seven. If you’re not fixed on a specific destination, Nicole recommends getting a cheap deal by using the ‘explore everywhere’ feature on Skyscanner that will track the cheapest flights to a number of countries after you select the airport you would like to fly out from.
3. Choose different airlines for one trip
Nicole continued: “The last one I find that I always find saves us so much money is to mix and match your airlines. You don’t have to fly out with Ryanair and come back with Ryanair.
“You could fly out with Ryanair, come back with TUI, fly out with Jet2, come back with easyJet like it doesn’t matter. That could save you hundreds of pounds.”
The savvy traveller’s TikTok clip has garnered several comments from people who are grateful for her tips. One said: “This is a great video. It can also help to use incognito mode and I found that if you book flights on a Tuesday or Wednesday it works out cheaper than to book on a Saturday.”
Another added: “I needed this hack over the Easter holidays. Am following for future trips.” Others left comments, including “always learning from you”, “thanks for the tips” and “that’s very good.”
