A dog trainer has revealed a “simple” technique that can help dogs develop an “insane” sense of impulse control.
Dogs are incredibly popular pets who quickly and easily become essential members of the family. Despite offering a variety of endearing qualities – such as their loyalty and affection – some dogs can are capable of giving in to some bad habits. Many share one common struggle – impulse control.
Training dogs to respond to commands is crucial, particularly if they’re going to accompany you in public spaces where there will be other people. It’s critical for dog owners to be able to control their pets and ensure they’re not a nuisance or a bother to those with phobias, allergies, or those who simply don’t like being around animals.
For some, a dog racing over to say hello is delightful, while for others, it’s the complete opposite. With this in mind, canine behaviourist Will Atherton has shared his advice on how to establish strong impulse control in your dog.

The popular pet expert has become a go-to source for many animal lovers looking to address and resolve unwanted behavioural issues in their dogs. Though it’s crucial to bear in mind Will’s advice is based on his personal views and experiences, and pet owners should conduct their own research outside of social media before introducing new practices or training routines with their pets.
In a widely viewed Instagram video, Will demonstrated impressive impulse control with his dog, Uncle Sully, amid the loud noises of a “game day” in a park. Despite the distracting sounds, Uncle Sully remained obediently by his side.
Will posed the question: “So how do you get absolutely insane impulse control just like this?” He then highlighted the noisy environment and Uncle Sully’s eager curiosity, asserting “every dog owner around the world can achieve this level of impulse control”. He explained that while the principle is simple, it requires immense commitment and dedication from the owner.
He continued: “It’s literally just teaching a sit command but then it’s about spending years, which we’ve been doing, of ensuring that any time I ask him to do a command like ‘sit’ and every other command, that he does that until I tell him otherwise.”
If Uncle Sully deviates from a command or moves before being told he’s allowed to do so, Will retrieves him, repositions him, and repeats the command until he complies.
Of the technique, he said: “The reality is that it’s both simple in principle and to do, but requires extreme levels of commitment and dedication on your part.”
As he and Uncle Sully were in an “extreme” environment throughout the footage, Will suggested the technique could still be used at home, perhaps by instructing your dog to stay in their bed until you give them permission to leave, repeating the command until they consistently obey. He expressed his firm belief that every dog can achieve these levels of impulse control.
Before bringing a dog into your home, it’s crucial to do your homework. Training is vital, and not all dogs are suitable for first-time owners.
